How to get ready for a photo shoot

1.       Grooming

1.1.        Basics – high resolution cameras can see every detail

1.1.1.      Clean hair combed / brushed and ready – stray hairs are distracting and hard to fix later.

1.1.2.      Brush teeth 

1.1.3.      Shower first – clear skin helps reduce oils and blemishes

1.1.4.      Manicure and pedicure – clean up the edges. Hands and feet are likely to be visible

1.1.5.      If prone to oily skin, blot skin with oil absorbent cloth just prior to the photo shoot. 

1.1.6.      If you normally wear make-up, apply accurately and with minimal coverage. 

2.       Clothing

2.1.        Complimentary colors are very important

2.1.1.      Neutral colors are preferred – those that fit the individuals color pallet

2.1.2.      Avoid loud distracting colors – they detract from faces and date images

2.1.3.      Avoid shirts with words and logos – too distracting and they date the image

2.1.4.      Avoid strong prints and strips – too distracting

2.1.5.      Consider how clothing worn by adjacent members in a photo will work together. May need to adjust to grouping to balance colors. 

Over the shoulder or full length sleeves are usually preferred 

2.1.6.      More flattering 

Formal or informal

2.1.7.      Shoot for consistency among participants 

Shoes

2.1.8.      Where possible shoot for consistent footwear if feet are going to be visible 

2.1.9.      If youth in a casual setting with sneakers – remove the shoes – barefoot is more consistent and less distracting. 

3.       Posing Tips

3.1.        Stand at 45˚ angle to the camera if possible

3.2.        Shift hips back to put weight on back foot – lean forward slightly at waist 

3.3.        Do something with hands if possible 

3.3.1.      In pockets or hook thumbs in front or back pockets or on belt

3.3.2.      One hand behind or on hip

3.3.3.      Keep arms away from body – leave a space

3.3.4.      Female – pull on hair, fingers in hair, fix your collar, fold arms, hold a purse? Etc. 

Tilt head 

3.4.        Face light where possible to brighten eyes 

3.5.        Eyeglass wearers – tilt head down slightly
